Central Permitting's hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What type of work do I need a building permit for?
Pursuant to the adopted code, any owner, authorized agent, or contractor who desires to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, demolish, or change the occupancy or occupant content of a building or structure, or any outside area being used as part of the building's designated occupancy (single or mixed) or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by the technical codes or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the building official and obtain the required permit for work. This means you need a permit for a fence, a shed, a screened porch, a new water heater, changing the A/C unit on your house, a redo of your roof, all swimming pools, just to name a few. | How long is a permit valid?
A permit is good for 180 days after issuance. Each approved inspection will extend the life of a permit for an additional 180 days.

Do I go to the City or County to apply for a permit?
For incorporated areas of the county you would go to that particular city. For unincorporated areas you would go to the county. |

How long does it take to receive a permit for a house?
It takes 5 to 10 working days, depending on the department's workload. |
How do I register my license with Flagler County in order to apply for a permit?
Submit a copy of your State Certification, proof of worker's compensation coverage or exemption and a copy of your Flagler County Occupational license along with a check for $10 to Central Permitting for license registration.

As an owner/contractor, do I have to come in to apply for my permit or can I send someone else in my place?
State statute requires you personally appear and sign the application in our office. We must notarize your signature on the application. |
If I am adding living area to my house, are there any other departments to deal with?
If you are adding or altering more than 100 square feet of living area, you will need to contact the Health Department if you are on a septic system to verify that your tank is adequate for the additional square footage.

Do I need a building permit for a barn?
Yes, unless the owner of the property has obtained an Agricultural Exemption from the Property Appraiser's office. This document deems the property as a bonifide "farm" and would be exempt from permit requirements. Agricultural zoned is not the same as agricultural exempt. |
Do I need a survey to get a permit?
Yes. An originally signed and sealed boundary survey and 2 plot plans that are duplicate copies of the survey showing the proposed improvements such as area to be cleared, new construction, mobile homes, accessory structures, fences and additions/alterations which affect the building footprint. The original survey shall be no more than 2 years old and will be retained on file as part of the permanent permit record. If the survey is more than 2 years old, you will need to obtain a statement from a Florida attorney or Florida title company that the survey has not changed? |
Do I need a permit to change out the plastic face of a sign?
No. |
Can I build my own house?
Yes, as long as the property is in your name and it is for your own use. Mobile homes require a licensed mobile home installer to apply for the permit under Florida Statute.

Can I delay any of the permit fees?
No. All permit fees are payable when the permit is issued. |
Do you have a file for blanket power of attorney forms?
No. Each permit must stand on its own and have a letter of authorization that is job specific if the contractor does not sign the application and have it notarized. |
Does the owner have to sign the application when a contractor is applying for the permit?
No. We do not require the owner(s) to sign at this time. |
Can a handyman get a permit?
