A new state program offers free inspections and an opportunity for matching grants to protect homeowners from damage in a hurricane.
Flagler County residents can apply for a free inspection under the My Safe Florida Home program either online at mysafefloridahome.com or by calling 1-800-342-2762 to request an application be mailed. The open enrollment period for the program ends Nov. 30.
The inspection is the first step in applying for assistance of up to $5,000 in matching funds to strengthen homes to withstand the onslaught of hurricane winds and rain. The state legislature has set aside $250 million to fund the first phase of the program.
Once the free inspection is complete the homeowner does not have to make the suggested repairs. The program does however require that the homeowners pay for half of the repairs themselves if they agree to participate in the program.
Properties not eligible for free home inspections include mobile or manufactured homes, second homes, rental properties, apartments, condominiums and businesses. The program is limited to homes with a homestead exemption and ones that are insured for less than $500,000.
Owners of mobile homes can call 850-201-8418 for information on what can be done to protect their home.
