Flagler County plans to begin construction on the Lehigh Greenway Rail Trail in 2007, beginning at Colbert Lane and moving west. The trail will connect three cities in the county, Bunnell, Flagler Beach and Palm Coast and will provide a safe method of non-motorized travel between communities.
The approximately 6.8 miles of trail will provide many recreation opportunities for visitors. Hiking, biking, canoeing and horseback riding will all be available on the site. Signs posted along the route will provide opportunities to learn about the ecology of the coastal hardwood wetlands and pinewoods in which the Trail is located and Florida's rich history.
Trees surround the trail virtually the entire distance. There are only two at grade crossings at Old Kings Road and Belle Terre Parkway. No other roads enter or cross the trail and no homes or driveways have direct access to the trail. The design precludes hidden or secret points of access since private roads are not permitted to enter the trail right-of-way.
The same trail characteristics that promote safety also help support environmental protection. No surface or effluent flow from public yards or factories or stores can flow directly onto the trail or the adjoining water body. The trail is buffered by distance and by heavy vegetation that will absorb runoff and suppress noise pollution.
At this time 30% construction plans are available for review at the county offices.
