Dioscorea bulbifera

The air potato is a vine that is extremely successful.   So successful, that it out competes native vegetation for sunlight.  This Asian vine can grow 60 to 70 tall and engulf native tree canopies.  It produces tubers that look similar to potatoes, except they grow all over the vine and dangle in the air.  Each one of the “potatoes” can produce a new vine.  Since the air potato produces large numbers of  “potatoes” that successfully grow, the air potatoes can cover areas rapidly.

Valuable Information

Once this plant becomes established, it can be extremely challenging to eradicate.  Finding all of the tubers in the ground is often nearly impossible.
